Post How to fix MAF, again.
Hi.
Thanks for a great MOD giving new life to one of the best strategy games ever made and even improving it in so many way.
I have some problems with MAF and I have no idea what more to do. Its gotten so bad that i almost get it every turn, but my Saves are almost 6,5mb since im playing on huge world getting to modern age.
I have searched a lot on the issue and nothing works.

-settings are on low.
-Exe-file open to >2gb with CFF Explorer.
-.ini file edited so that following are set too:
Disable PAK memory mapping (May affect performance)
DisablePAKMemoryMapping = 1

; Set to 1 to page units out when non-visible
DynamicUnitPaging = 1

These steps have worked on earlier system very well. Even to the point of the problem completely disappearing.
Does anyone know what more to do?

I run the game from the harddisk, not steam. on Win 10, 16GB and so on.

BtS is large address aware by default, so CFF explorer is redundant.

Anyway, you seem to have already done everything you can. Out of curiosity, was your previous system non-win 10, while your new one is win 10?

Yes the old one that I played it on last was Win 7 i think. Had win 8.1 but didn't play in that time as I recall.
Graphic Paging helps but cause another type of crash, that are not specified. :(

By now I have a strong belief that Win 10 is much poorer when it comes to memory management in Civ 4 than previous OSes.

So basically, there is nothing I can do?

I don't think so, unless you have a spare PC running Win 7 or something.

that can easily be arranged. :) You'd think that would help?

Well, that's the theory I currently have. I'd be happy if someone tested it. You see, MAF complaints skyrocketed last year, when Win 10 was released, and everyone complaining seems to have Win 10. I would be happy if you tried your save on Win7 x64 or something similar.

Seems a bit more difficult to get a hold of a comp that runs on Win 7 or less... Gonna keep trying.
But have you any experience with the stream version being better?

Nope. Steam version is actually worse in that Direct IP multiplayer doesn't work there. But you can also install non-steam version through Steam fortunately.

Okay... Now i testet it on a win 7 comp. No change at all. :( Have you heard of anyone playing Huge Earth to the end? My saves are 6,5mb each... And crashes every turn now...

Not really. TBH, I am not a fan of our earth maps. We maintain them mostly for fans who seem to be mostly playing them; I play random maps almost always.

I have MAF failures on both Win10 and Win7.

Nothing to do with graphics card or video memory. This computer has a significantly better graphics card and video memory than the previous one, and yet consistent crash to desktops with "memory allocation failure" in the modern age on that HUGE map of Earth when the number of units is in the thousands.

Have you tried turning on graphics paging? It might not cure the CTD on save, but may help with the rest. Another interesting thing to try (haven't had that verified) is unpacking the fpk files. It will take a lot longer to load, but may help with MAFs.
