Here are some instructions on how to retrieve the Python error logs from Civilization IV. These error logs can be very useful to the TR Team when debugging Python errors.
Python is a programming language that is used to control various parts of Civilization IV. If errors are encountered within the Python code these errors will be written to a log file that tells us exactly where in the code these errors occurred.
If you report a bug and we think that there may be an issue with the Python code, we may request that you provide us with these log files. You shouldn't feel obligated to do this if you don't want to, but understand that doing so may help us to correct the errors more quickly.
You'll first need to have logging switched on in the main CivilizationIV.ini file if you haven't switched it on already.
You should be able to find the ini file somewhere around here:
My Documents\My Games\Warlords\CivilizationIV.ini
The ini file has a bunch of options that can be changed. Here is an excerpt from this file:
; Create a dump file if the application crashes
GenerateCrashDumps = 0
; Enable the logging system
LoggingEnabled = 0
; Enable synchronization logging
SynchLog = 0
; Overwrite old network and message logs
OverwriteLogs = 1
Lines with a semi-colon in front are comments, and are ignored by the game. Entries that are either yes or no will have a value of 1 or 0.
To enable logging, the option you need to switch on is LoggingEnabled. Look for it towards the end of the file, in the [DEBUG] section:
; Enable the logging system
LoggingEnabled = 1
Setting LoggingEnabled to 1 will make the game record the extra log files. This may have a performance impact, so feel free to shut it back off after you're done with it.
The CivilizationIV.ini file is read each time Civilization IV starts, so the game will pick up the new value only after you have saved the file and restarted Civilization IV.
Once you have logging enabled, load up your saved game, progress until you hit the error or bug, and then zip up these two files and send them to us:
We're able to work with most any archive format (zip, 7zip, rar, etc.), so pick whichever one you prefer.
Important: Your logs will be wiped out each time you start up Civilization IV, so you'll have to start it up, hit the error, and then zip up the files before you start up a new game.
If you are willing and able, you can also provide your save file and what build version you are running. These can can also be useful.
